DONEGAL TOWN – Dún na nGall – Fort of the Foreigners

Donegal Town is an attractive vibrant town overlooking Donegal Bay with a backdrop of the Bluestack Mountains on the Wild Atlantic Way. Traditionally a Market Town with a Diamond at its centre it is easily accessible for visitors and locals to explore the abundance of shops, dining, cultural and heritage attractions, bars and entertainment suitable for all tastes and ages.

As we are on the Wild Atlantic Way and Donegal being the County name many visitors use our Town as their base to explore the region. We are immensely proud that Donegal Town has been voted in the top ten Destinations to visit in Ireland by Trip Advisor.

With our numerous hotels, restaurants, and food establishments it has always had the reputation of being an excellent food destination, which has led the way in attracting visitors to the area. Exceptionally high standards, local produce, and knowledge of what visitors and indeed the local market expect, have been key to putting Donegal Town on the map in the food space. Donegal Town is also very family friendly and local eateries provide exceptional service to families holidaying in the area as well as large group tours visiting our hotels.

For a small town, there is an abundance of variety in terms of eating establishments on offer. Donegal Town has hotels (ranging from 3* to 5*), restaurants, i.e., Mexican, Italian, Indian, Fine Dining as well as the best Irish Cuisine from Gastro Pubs, Bar food, Coffee Shops, Health food outlets i.e., Simple Simons who sell Local and National Artisan produce and embrace Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten Free Diets.

Located on the outskirts is Leghowney Country Market which takes place fortnightly all offering a wide selection of food and hospitality at an extremely competitive price range. Many food establishments and businesses have received National and International Awards for their products and services.

Many events take place throughout the year i.e., St Patricks Day Parade, Christmas Lights Switch On, Summer Festivals, Regattas, Easter Egg Hunts, and many others. Our flagship event A Taste of Donegal Food Festival as a brand has established Donegal Town and indeed the area as a Food Lover’s dream.

Donegal Town was awarded 2 National Accolades in 2019 i.e. becoming Ireland’s Foodiest Town and The Overall Winner in our population section of the National Pride of Place Awards. Receiving this recognition has created a great sense of pride in the entire community.
