Fort Dunree's origins date back to when it was known as 'dun fhraoigh', or 'the fort of the heather', suggesting its ancient roots. From Viking raids to Norman invasions, and pivotal moments like the interception of Wolf Tone in 1798, Fort Dunree has been a witness to centuries of turmoil and transformation.

World War I Significance:

The strategic importance of Fort Dunree was further cemented during World War I when the British North Atlantic Fleet sought refuge in Lough Swilly from feared German U-Boat attacks. The modernization of the fort at this time, including the addition of the 'Top Fort', marks a significant era in its military history.

A Symbol of Change:

Post-Irish Free State establishment, Fort Dunree's transition from a British-held port to being part of independent Ireland in 1938 represents a key chapter in Ireland’s journey towards sovereignty.
