Rathmullan The Way Forward CLG Appoints Tourism Specialists to Develop Boutique Cruise Strategy

Rathmullan The Way Forward CLG has appointed Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions to develop a Small Cruise Ship Strategy exploring Rathmullan’s potential as a boutique cruise destination on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. The project is supported by funding from BIM through the FLAG North Coastal Communities Development Scheme.

The strategy will examine how Rathmullan can responsibly attract small expedition and boutique cruise vessels. It will build on the village’s distinctive coastal character, exceptional natural harbour and the significant multi-million-euro investment in Rathmullan Pier, which has enhanced local marine infrastructure and strengthened the area’s capacity to support maritime tourism.

The strategy is not focused on attracting large cruise ships. Instead, it will examine whether Rathmullan could responsibly welcome smaller boutique vessels that are seeking authentic destinations, immersive visitor experiences and genuine engagement with local communities. This approach is intended to reflect Rathmullan’s scale, character and environmental sensitivities, supporting a low-volume, high-value model of tourism that complements village life and protects the qualities that make Rathmullan distinctive.

Situated on the Wild Atlantic Way, Rathmullan offers visitors access to some of Donegal’s most distinctive landscapes, heritage sites and local experiences. From the dramatic scenery of Lough Swilly and the iconic Fanad Lighthouse to Knockalla Drive, Portsalon Beach, Glenveagh National Park, the heritage of the Flight of the Earls, and a strong local food and outdoor adventure offering, the village is well placed as a gateway to the Fanad Peninsula and the wider Donegal region.

The appointment marks an important milestone in exploring how boutique cruise tourism could contribute to Rathmullan’s future while ensuring any development remains sustainable, community-led and environmentally responsible.

Mick McGlynn, Director of Rathmullan The Way Forward, said: “This strategy is about carefully exploring an opportunity that aligns with Rathmullan’s strengths. We want to understand how boutique cruise tourism can support local businesses, extend the tourism season and create lasting economic benefits while protecting the qualities that make Rathmullan such a special place to live and visit.”

Rathmullan The Way Forward is a community-led, volunteer-driven CLG established in 2018. Since its incorporation, the organisation has secured more than €1.3 million in funding for local projects, supporting its mission to develop Rathmullan in a sustainable and responsible way and enhance it as a vibrant place to live, visit and do business.

Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions will work closely with local businesses, tourism providers, community groups and public agencies throughout the project, ensuring the strategy is informed by local knowledge and identifies practical opportunities that benefit both residents and visitors.

Sheila Russell, Runda Hospitality & Tourism Solutions, said: “Across Europe and the North Atlantic, there is growing demand from expedition cruise operators for smaller ports that can offer authentic experiences and a strong sense of place. Rathmullan has many of the characteristics these operators are looking for: a deep natural harbour, upgraded marine infrastructure, exceptional scenery, fascinating heritage and a welcoming community. Our role is to develop an evidence-based strategy that evaluates the opportunity and provides a clear road map for sustainable development.”

The strategy will explore opportunities to develop authentic shore experiences across Rathmullan, the Fanad Peninsula and the wider region, creating partnerships with local guides, activity providers, food producers, craftspeople and hospitality businesses. The aim is to maximise the economic benefits of boutique cruise tourism while encouraging visitors to spend more time discovering Donegal’s landscapes, culture and communities.

Once completed, the strategy will provide a practical roadmap for positioning Rathmullan as one of Ireland’s leading boutique cruise destinations, ensuring future opportunities are delivered in a way that supports local enterprise, protects the natural environment and reflects the ambitions of the community.
