Malin Head Gathering The Force

Premiered on June 13th 2020 as part of Cruinniú na nÓg: a national day of youthful creativity, 'Gathering of the Force' was a huge hit not only because it represents the resilience of young people, but also for the breathtaking footage of one of Donegal’s most scenic areas, Banba’s Crown.

Cruinniú na nÓg is the flagship initiative of the Creative Ireland Programme's Creative Youth plan. Donegal County Council's Culture and Creativity Team administer the programme including in County Donegal. Each year it focuses on bringing creative events to young people in their own locality, but the public health restrictions of 2020, led to a creative approach to engaging young people creatively. One of the major benefits to this shift in focus was the lasting and far reaching record of some events.

William McElhinney of Wild Strands Ltd in Malin Head is passionate about the area, engaging young people and showcasing what Malin Head has to offer locals and the tourist industry. The short film was produced in collaboration with Memory Factory, Cinematic Sky and shows land and sea drone footage of the Star Wars Film location with sequence of Tai Chi Qigong moves at the spectacular setting of Banba’s Crown, Malin Head.

The footage was captured at Ireland’s most northerly point, named after Banba, the goddess of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the mythological tribe who lived in Ireland in ancient times. This location is also the film location of Star Wars: 'The Force Awakens' in 2018. The combination of the atmospheric landscape, the music and message has in itself mythological undertones of epic proportions.
