Lough Derg Invites Local Businesses to Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Open Day

PETTIGO, Co. Donegal – Lough Derg , renowned as one of Ireland’s most enduring and authentic spiritual destinations, is opening its doors to the local business community for a unique Open Day on Saturday, 28th March 2026.

This special event is designed specifically for providers in the hospitality, tourism, retail, and transport sectors. It offers a rare opportunity for local stakeholders to go behind the scenes and experience first-hand the rich heritage and modern facilities that make this site a global treasure, while it will also provide a great networking opportunity for attendees.

The Prior of Lough Derg, Monsignor La Flynn, explains: Alongside the increased numbers that we welcomed on our established pilgrimages last year, we had approaches from groups visiting from abroad who wanted to include Lough Derg as part of their wider itinerary through Ireland. In response to these requests we explored a range of options, in addition to the boat tours we have already been offering to groups, that could give visitors opportunities to experience for themselves something of the atmosphere and the heritage of Lough Derg, while guaranteeing the integrity of the traditional pilgrimage experience.

Event Highlights
Attendees will be treated to a comprehensive experience of the island’s offerings, including:
  • Guided Boat Tour: Enjoy the scenery with an introduction to the Lough Derg story
  • Historical Tour: Explore Station Island, including the Basilica and Harry Clarke windows
  • Culinary Experience: Food and refreshments prepared by Lough Derg’s resident chef.

Strengthening Local Tourism
As the travel industry shifts toward meaningful tourism and slow travel, Lough Derg aims to collaborate with local businesses to enhance faith-based and cultural itineraries. The Open Day serves as an educational platform for local providers to better understand how to cater to visitors seeking authenticity beyond conventional tourist attractions.
