Ramelton's Dave Gallaher Honoured!

Honouring Dave Gallaher: A Ceremony Connecting Ramelton and New Zealand

A unique and heartfelt ceremony took place at Dave Gallaher Park in Ramelton, Co. Donegal, commemorating the legacy of Dave Gallaher — the first captain of the original New Zealand All Blacks and one of Ramelton’s most celebrated historical figures.

In a symbolic gesture of connection between Ireland and New Zealand, former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick presented the Dave Gallaher Society with a small parcel of soil brought from New Zealand. In return, members of the Society offered soil from Gallaher’s birthplace in Ramelton to the visiting delegation.

This Ramelton soil will be placed at Eden Park, New Zealand’s national rugby stadium, creating a lasting bond between Gallaher’s hometown and the country where he made rugby history. The ceremony not only honoured Gallaher’s remarkable life but also strengthened the enduring friendship between both communities.

The event was covered by several media outlets including RTE News - read their report here
