Donegal Camino - 7 Day Walking Festival

County Donegal,Not Found

Find out more

The 5th Donegal Camino opens on Donegal Camino Sunday, the 31st of August at Shrove Beach, Inishowen.

The opening walk is a stunning loop walk of the spectacular Inishowen Head with gorgeous views of Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly.

Day 2, Monday, Sept 1st, takes walkers from Leenan Keel Beach on the Inishowen Penisnsula up onto the Urris Hills for another glorious, albeit strenuous walk before finishing at the historical site of Fort Dunree. We later transfer to Letterkenny.

Donegal Camino's third day, Tuesday Sept 2nd will be spent on a mix of road, track and trail, walking from the bridge between Lifford and Strabane to the picturesque and Oakfield Park. Walkers will take in much of Donegal's luscious farmlands on this walk and this route features many unique historical sites. Please note that a coach from Letterkenny will transfer walkers to the starting point and back to Letterkenny after a day of wonderful walking and many surprises.

Sunrise on Errigal, returns for Day 4, Wednesday Sept 3rd. Weather permitting this will be a poignant and spiritual climb to the summit under a star light sky before enjoying a magical sunrise on Donegal's highest mountain peak. Should weather interrupt the sunrise climb of Errigal, the Donegal Camino will be taking in the beautiful Bridle Path in Glenveagh National Park. Later on, day 4, walkers will go off shore from Burton Port to the Donegal Gaeltacht island of Arranmore for an overnight with dinner and a lively Arranmore Céilí.

On day 5, Thursday Sept 4th, walkers will enjoy a leisurely loop walk of Arranmore island with its many historical sites, captivating scenery and views of Donegal's Wild Atlantic Way Coastline. We return to the Donegal mainland that evening and will base ourselves in Glenties ahead of our next walk.

Friday, Sept 5th is day 6 and we will follow the International Appalachian Trail from Glenties, walking by the bank of the River Owenea and onto Ardara where we finish at the Ardara Distillery. This is an easy walk on flat ground for much of the way before a descent into Ardara which gives magical views of Portnoo Beach.

Our finalé will once again bring us onto Europe's Highest Sea Cliffs, Sliabh Liag for our final day. In celebrating our 5th Donegal Camino, we will walk a NEW route on Sliabh Liag, climbing to the viewing point of Bun Glas. For those who don't wish to climb Sliabh Liag, you can celebrate another successful Donegal Camino fundraiser for Cancer Care West Donegal with a Sliabh Boat Trip before joining all walkers at the Sliabh Liag Visitor Centre.

As is traditional on the Donegal Camino, there will be many surprises along the route combined with musical interludes and of course each evening will have local Donegal dining recommendations and music sessions when walkers can exchange stories of their day.

Please check out www.donegalcamino.ie for the full itinerary, walks, locations, routes, accommodation, dining and hospitality recommendations across Donegal. Details on how to register and fundraise are on our website and social media channels of Facebook and Instagram.
