County Donegal has become one of the places to be during ‘Heritage Week’.Over 120 events are taking place for National Heritage Week in County Donegal from Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 23, 2020 and most of them are free.

The pocket-size County Donegal Heritage Week Event Guide produced by the County Donegal Heritage Office of Donegal County Council outlining the programme is available free-of-charge from tourist offices, libraries, public service centres, museums and heritage centres. The National Heritage Week Event Guide will be available free at County Heritage Offices, County Councils, libraries, Council of National Cultural Institution members, Office of Public Works [OPW] sites, National Parks & Wildlife Service [NPWS] sites, Fáilte Ireland tourist offices, heritage centres, historical societies, various museums (Museums Standards Programme for Ireland participants), Bus Éireann stations, An Óige hostels and some hotels across the country.   Heritage Week is an opportunity to raise awareness of County Donegal’s built, cultural and natural heritage and to obtain some free publicity for events that you are planning. You can register your event by completing the on-line registration form at: www.heritageweek.ie  In order to be included in the countrywide guide, events need to be registered by June 7 deadline.  Events should be free of charge throughout the week.  Where this is not possible, organisers are asked to offer special concession rates.

The Heritage Council will promote National Heritage Week nationally and provide organisers with materials including posters and a programme of events to promote their activities. The County Donegal Heritage Office will compile the County Donegal ‘Heritage Week Events Guide again this year.  The information submitted to The Heritage Council will be used to compile the pocket-sized county booklet that has proved so popular in recent years.

The County Donegal Heritage Office, Cultural Services in association with The Heritage Council has produced a County Donegal Heritage Week Event Guide every year since 2004.  County Donegal has become one of the places to be during National Heritage Week thanks to all the events that heritage centres, museums, heritage organisations, community groups and individuals organise (often on a voluntary basis). Our heritage reinforces our sense of place and refines our sense of identity. The contribution that heritage makes to training/educational opportunities, attracts tourists  and generates revenue. Heritage Week is the ideal time to re-explore our heritage and remember that County Donegal has many more heritage sites and museums/heritage centres that are open during National Heritage Week so there should be events to suit everyone.

Please wear appropriate footwear for outdoor events.
