Eric Roberts shares his top things to do in Donegal

From epic beaches that unfold for miles to ancient mountain landscapes offering unrivalled views, not to mention the fantastic food culture and big-hearted locals; it’s no wonder Lonely Planet named Donegal the fourth-best region in the world to visit in 2024.

And it’s just as well because local TikTok sensation Eric Roberts couldn’t really keep the county to himself for much longer now, could he? After much consideration, Eric has kindly agreed to share Donegal with the rest of us and has let us in on his top five things to experience in this dynamic coastal county.

Life’s a beach

Itching to feel the sand between your toes and the waves lapping at your ankles? “Visit Donegal’s stunning beaches with no footprints in the sand” says Eric. “I’d recommend the boardwalk in Carrigart”, this pleasant 1.1km boardwalk stroll leads you across the grassy dunes and right onto pristine stretches of white sandy shoreline. It’s dog-friendly too, so bring your pooch along.

Take your pick of even more beautiful beaches in Donegal, 11 of which boast Blue Flag status and host plenty of fun water activities too.

Walk on the wild side

For a truly unique experience Eric recommends that you follow your natural instincts and “stand side by side with animals you have only seen on TV at Wild Ireland or Wild Alpaca Way.”

Home to the kind of majestic creatures that roamed free in Ireland many centuries ago – think wolves, bears, lynx and wild boar – Wild Ireland has rolled back the millennia on the rugged Inishowen Peninsula. With the area boasting the ideal temperate climate and woodland habitat for these magnificent animals, it’s a veritable four-legged oasis.

Over on Malin Head, take a walking tour along the Knockamany Bens with the resident alpaca herd and drink in those ocean views. Some of the friendliest locals you’ll find, the furry fellows at Wild Alpaca Way are naturally inquisitive creatures and are simply a delight to spend an afternoon with!

An ‘oldey’ but a goodie

If a roaring open fire and some delicious local food sounds like your ideal pitstop, it’s time to follow Eric’s next tip and “eat incredible food in The Olde Glen Bar.” This traditional pub and restaurant has been a true Donegal institution since the 1700s.

Where better to enjoy a chat with a stranger who soon becomes a pal and experience first-hand that infamous Donegal wit, warmth and charm. The brilliant live music and cosy atmosphere are just the icing on the cake. And if you’re only passing through? The Bia Box (a nifty converted shipping container) out the back of the bar sells tasty sandwiches for folk on the go.

Tempt yourself with more Donegal pubs, restaurants, cafes and food experiences here.

A pint and a panorama

"Enjoy a creamy pint at the Harbour Bar overlooking Downings Bay Beach" says Eric and you’ll have experienced two of the Rosguill Peninsula’s gems.

An idyllic Blue Flag beach nestled in the shelter of Sheephaven Bay, the view of Downings from the comfort of the legendary Harbour Bar is a real treat. Rain or shine, simply settle in and soak up that seascape.

Here comes the sun

Eric’s final tip for early birds with sturdy boots is to “watch the sunrise from Errigal Mountain.” A real bucket list item for keen walkers and hikers, Awaken Adventures can guide you on the trail to the mountain’s 751-metre-high peak – Donegal’s highest.

Named Ireland’s best sunrise (and sunset!) hike by Lonely Planet, see the sun gradually illuminate the landscape as you ascend and absorb those incredible 360-degree views.
