Donegal has an exceptionally high standard of natural ingredients and foods due to its unspoilt environment, climate, and richly diverse landscape. The passion and pride of Donegal producers and chefs, teamed with a wealth of local ingredients ensures that the Donegal food sector has something to entice and delight visitors and locals alike.
There is an ‘Irish Food Movement’ underway and this movement is gaining momentum, thanks to initiatives such as the Restaurants Association National Foodie Destinations Awards. It’s exciting to see how food tourism is seen as the new global trend and even more exciting to see how the industry, the agencies and the public in general, are working together to embrace the development of a foodie culture across the country. Donegal Town has been announced as the winner of the ‘Foodie Towns 2019’ award. The Foodie Town Award is given to towns or villages where tourism is a primary component of the local culture and economy. The judges said there was a great variety of dining experiences in the town, in addition to the hospitality and knowledgeability of the locals, and they also thought it was a clever idea to use the platform of the Wild Atlantic Way to help them stand out as a place to visit. The award comes on the heels of a very successful 'A Taste of Donegal Food Festival' which has really highlighted Donegal both town and county as a great culinary destination. Donegal also featured in another category with The Food Coast of Donegal coming in third place in the Foodie Destination with Waterford named as the winners.
