We're delighted to be welcoming railway historian Joe Begley back to the museum on Sunday 20th July at 3pm for a presentation on the last days of the CDR network!
After almost a century of service, the late 1950s saw the coming of the end of the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee and its operations. As the news spread, railway enthusiasts from far and wide came to the county to travel on the lines and make their own photographic record. One such was David Soggee, a prolific railway photographer who tended to favour photographing branch lines and minor railways. His colour photographs from a visit in July 1959 will form the mainstay of this presentation and provide a snapshot of the railway in its last days of operation.
Joe is a recognised authority on the Donegal railways, having worked alongside Steve Flanders on the revised editions of Dr. E.M. Patterson’s classic histories The County Donegal Railways and The Lough Swilly Railway, and is one of the museum’s most dedicated supporting members. We're very excited to have him back, and we look forward to welcoming you along for a fascinating afternoon
