Full Event Description

One for the horticulturalists!

Dr Marianne O’Kane Boal will discuss the symbolism of roses in history, poetry and stories

in the Salthill House garden shed.

This will be followed by Salthill owner Elizabeth Temple demonstrating how to grow roses

with fresh examples cut from the gardens of the different varieties of historical roses grown

here outside. A specialist demonstration that will action the words of Dr Marianne and let

those attending get their hands dirty.

Dr. Marianne O'Kane Boal is a curator, critic and art historian. She writes for the Irish Arts Review and is President of AICA Ireland, the International Association of Art Critics. Her talk will be called: ‘The symbolism and significance of Roses in the History of Art.’

Elizabeth Temple has over four decades created a uniquely beautiful walled garden in Mountcharles, Co. Donegal. Salthill Gardens is a 1.3-acre, 18th-century walled garden overlooking Donegal Bay with a distinctive painterly aesthetic. Elizabeth took on a beautiful green space, that was substantially lawn, and over time transformed it with flowing paths and the planting of many vivid perennials, shrubs and trees - including a wonderful collection of old roses - creating a layered and richly textured, impressionistic landscape like no other.
